Exploring symbolism, art, and hidden history open to all audiences, everyone is welcome!

BUFFALO, NY Have you ever looked at a tarot card and seen a piece of Jewish history? The Jewish Museum of Buffalo is excited to announce its newest exhibit, The Torah in the Tarot, opening June 20, 2026.

The exhibit is based on the groundbreaking research of Stav Appel, who discovered hidden Jewish symbols tucked away in one of the world’s oldest tarot decks: the 17th-century Jean Noblet Tarot de Marseille.

Why Tarot?

While many people think of tarot only as a way to tell the future, this exhibit looks at it as a secret "visual language." Appel’s research suggests that during times of religious persecution—when practicing Judaism was dangerous—these cards may have been used as a clever way to teach Jewish stories, Hebrew letters, and traditions in secret.

What to Expect

Visitors will get a close-up look at the 22 "Major Arcana" cards (the most famous cards in the deck) and see exactly how they mirror Torah stories and Jewish symbols. It’s a fascinating look at how people kept their culture alive through art and mystery.
